We offer the following pathways.
VET enables students in the Senior Years (Years 10-12) to gain a nationally recognised qualification while still at school. This opportunity enhances their learning and provides them with hands-on work experience, whilst gaining a qualification.
At Mount Carmel College, students in Years 10 – 12 have the opportunity to undertake Vocational Education & Training (VET) as part of their SACE studies at our Western Technical College and other Registered Training Organisations. These programs give your child an excellent opportunity to enhance their regular school studies, experience the world of work, receive SACE credits and gain nationally recognised qualifications while still at school. VET is a diverse form of learning in the Senior Years and aims at making the transition from school to further study, training or work, easier.
Students can gain VET qualifications in two ways:
For most VET studies, students attend programs off campus at TAFE colleges, schools or other providers. Students are responsible for attending all VET classes and need to manage their workload and ensure they are able to make up for missed lessons and assessment in their school subjects.
Usually students will identify an area they are interested in, and the necessary arrangements can be put in place for them to take the program. At Mount Carmel College, students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have chosen to study a wide range of VET courses including hairdressing, construction, automotive, health care, music studies and photography, to name a few.
VET qualifications are nationally recognised and are the same as the qualifications that are taught by training providers such as TAFE. When students leave school they may use their qualifications to reduce the amount of further study they may have to complete. Additionally, employers look favourably on existing qualifications.
During the school year, Year 10 students participate in attending mock interviews, designed to prepare them to make the transition from school to work or further study. Mock interviews are conducted by volunteers and members of the community and are a compulsory activity, assessed as part of the Personal Learning Plan.
Mount Carmel College is committed to educating students about career choices and pathways. Career development is a part of the school curriculum , so during their school experience at Mount Carmel they develop clear understanding of their strengths and interests and can make good decisions about career pathways.
Flexible Learning Pathways, including Vocational Education and Training, are available to students in Years 10, 11 and 12.
From semester 2 in Year 10, students can undertake Introduction to Building and Construction, Introduction to Engineering and Introduction to Hair and Beauty.
